Hello, I am Dr. Laura McGeown! I am a clinical psychologist based in London, Ontario. I am registered with The College of Psychologists of Ontario as a Psychologist in Interim Autonomous Practice. I have expertise in providing assessment and intervention services to adults who are experiencing mental health difficulties such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks, obsessions/compulsions, and eating disorders. In this clinic, I offer virtual (online) psychotherapy to adults.
I am a scientist-practitioner and use an evidence-based, integrative approach with my clients that is strongly rooted in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Driven by the cognitive behavioural framework, I pay close attention to the dynamic interplay between thoughts, emotions, physiology, and behaviours in shaping mental wellness and disorder. Depending on the individual’s difficulties and our treatment goals, I will also integrate components of other evidence-based treatment modalities, such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), emotion-focused therapy (EFT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Ultimately, I take an empirically-informed, culturally-sensitive, and client-centred approach to clinical care.
I completed my Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, and I completed my predoctoral residency at the Edmonton Consortium Clinical Psychology Residency in Edmonton, Alberta. In addition to my work with the Virtual Psychology Clinic, I work with the Adult Eating Disorders Service through the London Health Sciences Centre. My research interests include the psychophysiological underpinnings of disordered eating behaviour, personality factors associated with eating disorders, and seeking ways to improve treatment outcomes in the area of disordered eating.
Outside of my work, I enjoy listening to music and attending concerts, playing guitar, immersing myself in nature, engaging in my home yoga practice, reading, and spending time with friends and family.
